Everything you need to plan this trip
Fitness Level
The Victoria Falls Marathon itself is moderately hilly. The real test is the 18-day overland lifestyle — early mornings, camping chores, long driving days. Mental stamina matters more than running fitness.
Prerequisites
- Comfortable running a half-marathon minimum
- Able to sleep in a tent and adapt to changing conditions
- Good general health — you're 2,000+ km from advanced medical care
Visa & Entry
Multi-country overland — Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia. Kenyan passport holders are visa-free for Tanzania (EAC) and Zambia (90 days), and get a visa-on-arrival in Zimbabwe, Malawi, Botswana, and Namibia. The KAZA UniVisa (USD 50) is the recommended option for tourists who visit both Zimbabwe and Zambia.
What you need
- Valid passport with at least 6 blank pages (for multiple stamps)
- Yellow fever vaccination certificate (mandatory)
- USD cash in clean, recent notes for visa fees at border posts
- Travel insurance (strongly recommended)
Verified 2026-04. Breakdown for Kenyan passports: Tanzania free (EAC), Malawi visa-on-arrival USD 75, Botswana visa-on-arrival (free up to 90 days for Kenya), Namibia visa-on-arrival, Zimbabwe visa-on-arrival USD 30 (or KAZA UniVisa USD 50 covering Zim + Zam), Zambia visa-free 90 days. Total per-traveller budget: roughly USD 100–150 in border fees. Trek walks you through every crossing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Kenya → Tanzania → Malawi → Botswana → Namibia → Zimbabwe → Zambia. Seven countries in 18 days.
Yes — EAC passport holders still need visas for Malawi, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Zambia (Botswana and Namibia are visa-free for Kenyans; others vary). We recommend the KAZA UniVisa ($50) which covers Zimbabwe and Zambia. Trek provides a full visa checklist on booking.
Mostly. Some campsites have chalets or rooms we can upgrade to (add-on available). Two meals per day (breakfast and dinner) are included. Lunches are typically at restaurants we stop at — your cost.
This is a travel experience, not a fitness challenge. If you can handle a half-marathon and don't mind 18 days on an overland truck with camp chores, you're ready.
